Engine Basic Setting
(VAG 1551 function 04)
^ The engine management system uses a learning function to set certain parameters which by design eliminates the possibility of mechanical adjustment. The current engine basic setting (the current learned values) will be erased if the Engine Control Module (ECM) and/or battery are disconnected. After selecting "Basic Setting" function 04, the engine may have a rough idle for a short period as the system "learns" the new values. When this occurs, let the engine idle for a few minutes until the learning process is completed and the engine resumes running smoothly
^ By initiating "Basic Setting" function 04 using the VAG 1551 scan tool, all the learning requirement displays (display group 007 and/or 008) will be set to zero. This is to force the ECM to adapt to new oxygen sensor learned values (following repairs).
^ Learning is suspended if a malfunction is stored in DTC memory that affects oxygen sensor control (but not with sporadic malfunctions).
