VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), Connecting
Requirements
- Fuses 13, 21, 27, 28 and 32 in central electric panel OK
- Fuel Pump (FP) relay OK.
Procedure
- Switch OFF ignition
- Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/1 to DLC.

- First connect black adaptor cable connector (voltage supply) to DLC # C. These displays appear alternately as shown:
VAG self-diagnosis HELP
1 - Rapid data transfer
OR
VAG self-diagnosis HELP
2 - Blink code output
Note: Do not connect the white adaptor cable connector if there is no display. Instead, check the voltage supply for the scan tool, Refer to Data Link Connector / Testing and Inspection. Testing and Inspection
- Connect white adaptor cable connector to DLC # D.
- The blue connector is not used
- To obtain additional operating instructions press the HELP button.
- To step through the program sequence, press the arrow button
Selectable Functions
- Depending on which function is required; either switch ON ignition or start engine and let idle
DTC memory reading and erasing (function 02):
- Check with engine idling.
Note: If engine does not start, crank engine 4 to 6 seconds and leave ignition switched ON.
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (function 03):
- Switch ignition ON, but do not start engine.
Basic Setting (function 04):
- Let engine idle or switch ignition on.
Erase DTC Memory (function 05):
- Check with engine idling, leave ignition switched on after checking the DTC memory.
End Output (function 06):
- Engine idling or ignition on.
Code Control Module (function 07):
- Switch ignition ON.
Read Measuring Value Block (function 08):
- Let engine run and/or switch ignition ON.
Read Individual Measuring Values (function 09):
- Let engine idle at operating temperature.
Adaptation (function 10):
- Let engine idle.
Operating Mode
- Press button 1 to select operating mode "Rapid data transfer", Display will appear as follows:
Rapid data transfer HELP
Enter address word XX
OR
- Press button 2 to select operating mode "Blink code output", Display will appear as follows:

Activate with (arrow) key

After selecting operating mode Rapid data transfer select diagnostic function.
- Engine Electronics 01
- Transmission Electronics 02
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics".Display will appear as follows:

- Press Q button to enter input. The engine control module identification number is indicated via the display, for example: 8A0 906 266 B. Display will appear as follows:

Coding 003 WSC 06812
- Display breakdown is as follows:
^ ECM identification: 8A0 906 266 B (example)
^ Engine design: V6
^ Engine displacement: 2.8 liter
^ Number of valves per cylinder: 2 valves
^ Fuel injection system: MPI = Multi-Point Injection
^ ECM software version: V6 (EPROM status of ECM)
^ ECM hardware/software version: DOB (ECM program status)
^ Coding: 003
^ Dealer number whose VAG 1551 scan tool was used to carry out the last coding or adaptation: WSC ______
- Check for correct ECM coding, Refer to ECM Coding ECM Coding (Function 07)
Note: Only during idle speed do correct specifications regarding the engine control module number and related coding occur.
- Press (arrow) button. If display appears as follows:

ECM does not answer\
- Print out a list of possible causes by pressing the VAG 1551 HELP button
- After eliminating possible causes, reselect operating mode and address word, display appears as follows:

- Switch on the printer using the print button, lamp in print button lights
- When the printer is switched ON stored malfunctions are automatically printed out in sequence
