Electrical Compass Zone Selection and Calibration: Procedure

2015 Acura MDX BaseSECTION Procedure

NOTE:

  • Check the vehicle battery condition first - Refer to: Battery Test (2014 2015), or Battery Test (2016 2017 2018 2019 2020) .
  • You should do this procedure any time the electrical compass unit is replaced.
  • You should do this procedure in an open area away from buildings, power lines, other vehicles, and any other sources of strong magnetic fields.
  • In most areas, there is a variation between magnetic north and true north. The compass zone needs to be set to your geographic zone to compensate for this variation.
  • The electrical compass unit may need to be manually calibrated after exposure to a strong magnetic field. If the electrical compass unit seems to be continually showing the wrong direction, and is not self-calibrating, do the following.
  1. Electrical Compass Zone Selection and Calibration

    Zone Selection

    1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

    2. Make sure the center display is in the main screen of any function.

    3. Press and hold the INTERFACE DIAL on the center switch panel/interface dial for about 5 seconds. The center display shows the Compass Settings main menu.

    4. Rotate the INTERFACE DIAL knob to select the Zone Adjust, and press the INTERFACE DIAL to enter the selection.

NOTE:  If necessary, press the BACK button to return to the previous display.

    5. The display shows the currently selected zone number between from 1 to 15. Find the zone for your area on the zone map. If the correct zone is not shown, turn the INTERFACE DIAL knob to cycle the zone lists up or down.

    6. Press the INTERFACE DIAL to decide the selected zone. Returning to the Compass Settings main menu, press the BACK button to end the zone selection mode.

    Calibration

Although the compass is self-calibrating, it may need to be manually calibrated after exposure to a strong magnetic field. If the azimuth information is blinking and CAL is shown on the center display, do this to calibrate the compass:

    1. Start the engine.

    2. Make sure the center display is in the main screen of any function.

    3. Press and hold the INTERFACE DIAL on the center switch panel/interface dial for about 5 seconds until you hear a beep. The center display shows the Compass Settings main menu.

    4. Rotate the INTERFACE DIAL knob to select the Calibration, and press the INTERFACE DIAL to enter the selection.

NOTE:  If necessary, press the BACK button to return to the previous display.

    5. The display shows the Calibration Start. Press the INTERFACE DIAL to start the calibration. The azimuth information blinks and the CAL indicator comes on.

    6. Drive the vehicle slowly in three complete circles (20 seconds or more per a circle). When the calibration is successfully completed, the compass display stops blinking and the CAL indicator goes off.

    • The audio system is not related to the electrical compass system. Even if the electrical compass system is calibrating, the display returns to the normal display which was last selected.
    • If the calibration fails, try another location (an open area away from buildings, power lines, other vehicles, and any other sources of strong magnetic fields) and do the calibration procedure again.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
