TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): BJA10085, Date of Issue:  December 20, 2018
ACURA: All Models

BACKGROUND

The Cylinder Wall Inspection Tool (P/N 07AAJ-R70A300) was developed to provide a more consistent way to determine if a scratch will be acceptable or not. Traditional methods such as using a fingernail or pencil lead are inconsistent and is based on the interpretation of the technician.

Due to these inconsistencies, there has been a high quantity of short block replacement since most technicians would prefer to error on the side of caution than risk a possible comeback. The reason for this is because the majority of blocks replaced under warranty and returned to American Honda for evaluation had light to moderate scratching.

Many of these blocks were inspected, reassembled with new pistons and rings, and extensively tested. Originally it was thought that light to moderate cylinder wall scratches affected the engine block durability and oil consumption. Current testing on affected vehicles (as listed in the S/Bs) indicates that light to moderate scratches do not affect these two issues.

    NOTE:
    • If the tool slides over vertical scratches consistently without catching, skipping, or vibrating, the scratch is acceptable and this cylinder wall is acceptable for use.
    • If tip of tool consistently catches, skips, or vibrates while going over vertical scratches multiple times, the short block must be replaced.

Refrain from using a finger nail to test for scratches. Light to moderate scratches that your finger nail might catch on will pass with this tool.
