Diagnostic Procedure

2004 Acura 3.5RLSECTION Diagnostic Procedure
  1. Start engine. Hold engine speed at 3000 RPM with no load and transmission in Park or Neutral until radiator fan comes on, then allow engine to idle. Using scan tool, check idle speed under no-load conditions (all accessories off). If idle speed is 600-700 RPM, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. If idle speed is not 600-700 RPM, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch off. Remove cover from IAC thermal valve. See Figure . Start engine and allow to idle. Place finger on valve seat area and check for airflow. If airflow is not present in valve seat area, go to next step. If airflow is present in valve seat area, check coolant level and for air in cooling system. If cooling system is okay, replace IAC thermal valve.
  3. Check for vacuum leaks and ensure throttle valve is fully closed. Repair as necessary. Adjust idle speed. If idle speed cannot be adjusted, replace IAC valve.
NOTE: Perform PCM reset procedure if IAC thermal valve was removed. See PCM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODESΒ  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
