Ensure steps for spark and fuel testing in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article have been performed.

  • Test battery.
  • Test starter.
  • Check for engine being locked up.
  • Check for slipped or broken timing belt.
  • Check immobilizer system.
  • Check ignition system. See IGNITION CHECKS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
  • Check fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
  • Check fuel pump (PGM-FI) main relay. See PGM-FI MAIN RELAY under FUEL SYSTEM in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
  • Check crankshaft position/cylinder position sensor circuit (3.5RL). See appropriate DIAGNOSTIC TEST in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 3.5RL article.
  • If MIL light comes on and stays on or never comes on, check MIL circuit. See MIL MALFUNCTION in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  • Check for contaminated fuel.
  • Check engine compression. See MECHANICAL INSPECTION under PRELIMINARY INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENTS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
