Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

2004 Acura 3.5RLSECTION Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
  1. Ensure fuse No. 13 (7.5-amp) located in underdash fuse/relay box is okay. If fuse is okay, locate Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) next to engine oil filter. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect VSS 3-pin connector. Connect Test Harness (07LAJ-PT30200A) in line only with VSS harness connector. See Fig 1 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, check voltage between White test harness clip and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Yellow wire between VSS and fuse No. 13 (7.5-amp).
  3. Disconnect White test harness clip. Using DVOM, check voltage between Green test harness clip and ground. If 5 volts or more exists, go to next step. If 5 volts or more does not exist, repair short in Blue/White wire between VSS, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), cruise control unit, steering column control unit, driver's multiplex control unit, and navigation control unit. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ  .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect test harness. Remove PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)Β  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect PCM 22-pin connector "D". See Figure . Using a DVOM, check for continuity in Green/Black wire between PCM 22-pin harness connector "D" terminal No. 22 and VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 1. Green/Black wire changes to Green/Blue at connector C114 near throttle position sensor. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Green/Black or Green/Blue wire between VSS and PCM.
  5. Raise and support front of vehicle. Place transmission in Neutral. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Block one front wheel, slowly rotate opposite wheel and measure voltage between VSS connector terminal No. 3 (Blue/White wire) and terminal No. 1 (Green/Blue wire). If voltage pulses from zero volts to about 5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage does not pulse as specified, replace VSS. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)Β  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Reconnect PCM 22-pin connector "D" and VSS connector. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTERΒ  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin connector "A". Block one front wheel, slowly rotate opposite wheel and measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 22-pin connector "A" terminal No. 18 (Blue/White wire). If voltage pulses from zero volts to about 5 volts or more, replace speedometer. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTERΒ  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage does not pulse as specified, repair open in Blue/White between VSS and instrument cluster 22-pin connector "A".

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
