SYMPTOM

The window(s) will not go down when you press the window switch.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The window motor gears are binding.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Diagnose the condition of the power window motors, and replace all four-window regulators.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the door panel from the affected door. Refer to Section 20 of the 1996-99 3.5RL Service Manual.
  2. Disconnect the power window motor connector (driver's, C743; passenger's, C763; left rear, C784; right rear, C794).
  3. Verify the condition of the power window motor:
    1. Driver's Window:Β  At the window motor connector, apply battery voltage (+) to terminal 1, and ground (-) terminal 2; the window should go down. See (Fig 1 ).

    2. Any Other Window:Β  At the window motor connector, apply battery voltage (+) to terminal 2, and ground (-) terminal 1; the window should go down. See (Fig 2 ).

  4. Based on the condition of the power window motor, do this:
    • If the motor works when you apply battery voltage, disregard this information, and continue with normal troubleshooting.
    • If the motor doesn't work, replace all four-power window regulators. Refer to Section 20 of the 1996-99 3.5RL Service Manual.
