SYMPTOM
Navigation System may have one or more of these symptoms:
- Navigation system locks up after keying the OK icon on the Calculate route screen.
- Navigation system resets, locks up, or shuts down while following a calculated route.
- Display screen locks up at globe.
- A yellow Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Error message appears on display screen.
- Display screen remains black or goes black.
- While entering information or a destination, system locks up.
PROBABLE CAUSE
Navigation system software-related problems or a defective HDD.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Rewrite navigation system software on HDD or replace HDD with a remanufactured unit.

Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Technical Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.
DIAGNOSIS
- Remove HDD from control unit, and inspect HDD for physical damage. If HDD is physically damaged, replace it.
- Turn ignition switch to ON (II).
- Touch OK icon on disclaimer screen, and wait for Main Menu to come up.
- If screen stays black or has a yellow HDD error message, or system will not go to Main Menu, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B .
- If Main Menu display comes up, continue to REPAIR PROCEDURE A .
REPAIR PROCEDURE A
- From Main Menu, access Set-Up screen. On the 3.5RL, push SETUP button on the right side of display screen. See (Fig 1). On the 3.2TL touch Setup icon on the screen.
- From Set-Up screen, access System Information screen. On the 3.5RL, touch Info icon; on the 3.2TL, touch Others icon and then touch Information icon. See (Fig 2).
- Check software version that is installed on HDD as listed at the bottom of System Information screen. See (Fig 3). Software must be version 3.48 or higher for the 3.5RL, and 1.14 or higher for the 3.2TL.
- If software version is lower than 3.48/1.14, rewrite the HDD with the latest version available from Acura Link 2000. Refer to Service Bulletin 97-016, 1997-99 3.5RL: TQI OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM , or Service Bulletin 98-023, 1999 3.2TL TQI OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM .
- If software version is 3.48/1.14 or higher, ask customer to clarify symptoms. Refer to Navigation System troubleshooting section of appropriate service manual.NOTE: Certain circumstances and system limitations will result in occasional vehicle positioning errors. Some customers may think errors indicate a problem with navigation system when, in fact, the system is normal. Refer to Navigation System Owner's Manual for more information.
REPAIR PROCEDURE B
- If navigation system will not activate or has a yellow Hard Disk Drive Error message, force-start display. Refer to page 23-391 of 1996-99 3.5RL Service Manual, or to page 22-270 of 1999 3.2TL Service Manual for force-starting procedure.
- When System Links screen appears, touch RETURN icon on screen. See (Fig 4).
- From Diagnosis Menu, access Unit Check screen by touching UNIT CHECK icon. See (Fig 5).
- From Unit Check screen, access System History screen by touching SYSTEM HISTORY icon. See (Fig 6).
- Scan each line looking for error codes0801
or 0810,
andBPB
error codes; if needed, use joystick to scroll down and right. Fig 7 below shows examples of 0801, 0810, and BPB error codes.
- If an error code 0801, 0810, or BPB is found, replace HDD with a remanufactured unit. Refer to Service Bulletin 96-025, NAVIGATION SYSTEM COMPONENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM , for parts and parts ordering information.
- If 0801, 0810 or BPB error codes are not found, rewrite software on HDD with latest version available from Acura Link 2000.NOTE: To install or rewrite software on HDD, refer to Service Bulletin 97-016, 1997-99 3.5RL: TQI OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM , or Service Bulletin 98-023, 1999 3.2TL TQI OF THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM .
