Symptom Diagnosis
Symptom checks cannot be used properly unless the problem occurs while the vehicle is being tested. To reduce diagnostic time, ensure Basic Diagnostic Procedures in the BASIC TESTING article and Self-Diagnostic Tests in the TESTS W/CODES article were performed before diagnosing a symptom. Recommended system and component checks may not apply to all vehicles. Trouble shoot symptom probable causes in order listed under symptom checks. Symptoms available for diagnosis include the following:

- Cold Fast Idle Too Low
- Cold Fast Idle Too High
- Idle RPM Fluctuates

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
