Workshop finding:

One or both of the following DTCs are stored in the engine control module (ECM), J623 (address word 0001):

  • DTC P2440(00)  (Secondary air injection system switching valve stuck open bank1)
  • DTC P2442(00)  (Secondary air injection system switching valve stuck open bank2)

Tip:  If the MIL is not on, this bulletin does not apply.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

One of two scenarios can cause this condition:

  • Scenario A:  One of the combi valves is defective.
  • Scenario B:  The vacuum solenoid is defective.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Updated combi valves and vacuum solenoid.

SERVICE

  1. Before performing any repair, determine if Scenario A or Scenario B is causing the condition.
NOTE: If vehicle has a non-UDS engine control module, the information on MIL bit does not apply. Instead ensure that the faults for the secondary air injection system are the most recent faults causing the MIL.

Scenario A is the cause if:

    • One or both of the DTCs listed in the Condition is stored.
    • The bit for MIL on shows "1" for one DTC only (Figure 1).
      G11786798

Scenario B is the cause if:

    • Both of the DTCs listed in the Condition are stored.
    • The DTCs were stored at the same time.
    • The bit for MIL on shows "1" for both DTCs.
      G11786799
  2. Depending on which scenario is present, replace the defective part:

    For Scenario A:

    • Replace the combi valve of the bank with the DTC that caused the MIL to illuminate.

    For Scenario B:

Replace the vacuum solenoid valve that controls both of the combi valves.
