SERVICE INFORMATION

On Board Diagnostic (OBD) information for the 01N transmission (Repair Group 01 ) is included here to cover OBD II requirements beginning with the 1996 model.

Repair information for the remaining Repair Groups is to be found in the Audi 90, Cabriolet Repair Manual - Automatic Transmission 01N, Model Year 1995, Edition 02.95, W42 552 193 113.

ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD), FUNCTION

The 01N automatic transmission is controlled electro-hydraulically.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- receives input signals from components that affect gear selection, and sends output signals to solenoid valves that control gear selection in the valve body. The solenoids guide the created oil pressure from the ATF oil pump to the respective clutch or brakes.

FUNCTIONS OF THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE

"On Board Diagnostic" capability refers specifically to the electrical and electronic controls.

The TCM -J217- is equipped with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory so that in the event of an electrical/electronic component malfunction or an open circuit, the cause of the malfunction can be determined quickly.

The TCM -J217- diagnoses and stores certain malfunction types under various conditions. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TABLE.

Malfunctions in the monitored sensors or components are stored in the DTC Memory along with an indication of the type of malfunction and location. If there is a malfunction, it is stored as a static malfunction.

Malfunctions that only occur once become sporadic (temporary) malfunctions. Malfunctions that occur sporadically are also coded as such.

Malfunctions stored as sporadic in the DTC memory are indicated when Scan Tool VAG 1551 (or VAG 1552) is activated as a "sporadic occurring malfunction". "SP" will then appear on the display. This malfunction is printed out if the printer is switched on.

Malfunctions which are stored as sporadic in the DTC memory are automatically erased after 40 transmission cold starts (and subsequent transmission warm-up).

The possibilities for OBD can only be determined with VAG 1551 (or VAG 1552) operating mode 1 - "Rapid data transfer".

  • Functions of the Scan Tool 1551, please refer to LIST OF FUNCTIONS WHICH CAN BE SELECTED TABLE.

The possibilities of OBD can also be used with a Generic Scan Tool (GST) or with Scan Tool VAG 1552 under address code 33. Functions of On Board Diagnostic, see ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD II) FUNCTION.

TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SAFETY FUNCTIONS

If critical malfunctions occur while driving, the transmission will continue to operate in a fail-safe mode. If a malfunction occurs while the selector lever is in position "D", "3", or "2", the 3rd Gear fail-safe mode is activated.

If a malfunction occurs while the selector lever is in position "1", "P", "N" or "R" the fail-safe mode for that stage is activated.

If the engine is started again in the fail-safe mode and the malfunction occurs when the selector lever is in position "D", "3" OR "2" then 3rd Gear is activated hydraulically until the malfunction is repaired.

If there are malfunctions that result in the fail-safe, the transmission remains in the fail-safe mode until the ignition is switched off.

MEANING OF "MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT" (MIL)

If exhaust influencing malfunctions are diagnosed from the control module, it will be indicated with the MIL switching on. MIL is shown in Fig 55 .

Extremely critical malfunctions are indicated immediately by the MIL.

Less critical malfunctions are indicated if they occur during two sequential "trips".

FUNCTIONAL CHECK OF MIL

Switch ignition on.

  • MIL must light up. If not, without starting engine check wiring or replace bulb.

Start engine and let idle: MIL must switch off after several seconds.

If the MIL stays lit after the engine has been started, read the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory.

RECOGNIZING A "TRIP"

  • After the ignition has been switched on all exhaust relevant diagnostic functions for malfunction recognition must be checked one time.
  • After the ignition has been switched on a driving stretch of at least 10 km must be recognized. For faulty sensor replacement value is 10 minutes at drive speed.
  • An ATF operating temperature of approx. 75°C must be attained by the transmission. This requirement is not applicable if transmission fluid temperature sensor is faulty.
  • When an exhaust relevant malfunction is recognized the trip is complete.

RECOGNIZING A "TRIP"

  • After the ignition has been switched on all exhaust relevant diagnostic functions for malfunction recognition must be checked one time.
