The Engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors a number of internal signals through calculations and compares them. The aim is to ensure reliability during operation.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects that:

  • Internal checks give unacceptable results.

The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of:

  • Engine running.

Substitute Value 

  • Various internal signals in the engine control module (ECM) are replaced with default values.

Possible Source 

  • Poorly charged battery or corroded connecting wiring.
  • Damaged software in the engine control module (ECM).
  • Damaged engine control module (ECM).

Fault symptom[s] 

  • Warning lights and chimes/Malfunction Indicator Light ("Check engine" light) indication/no indication
