NOTE: Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor may also be known as a pick-up coil or Hall Effect sensor.

Disconnect connector at distributor. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals. See Fig 1 . See CMP SENSOR RESISTANCE table. Replace CMP sensor if resistance is not within specification. If resistance is within specification, go to next step.
If ignition coil and CMP sensor test okay, use feeler gauge to check air gap. See CMP SENSOR AIR GAP table. If gap is not correct, loosen CMP sensor mounting screws and move CMP sensor to adjust air gap. Recheck for spark. If spark is still not available, go to TESTS W/CODES article to retrieve stored codes.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

• You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.

• Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.

• The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.

• You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.

• You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
