Oxygen Sensor
- Start engine and warm to operating temperature. Pull back connector seal at oxygen sensor. Using a digital voltmeter with at least a 10-megohm input impedance, backprobe oxygen sensor connector. If connector is inaccessible, backprobe control unit at appropriate terminal. See CONTROL UNIT OXYGEN SENSOR TERMINAL IDENTIFICATIONΒ table, or disconnect oxygen sensor and connect voltmeter directly between sensor and a good ground.
- While monitoring voltmeter, increase engine speed to about 2000 RPM and hold for a few seconds. Allow engine to idle for a few seconds. Repeat procedure. Voltmeter should fluctuate between zero and .8 volt, without being constantly high or low.
- If voltage is not as indicated, lean (pull a vacuum hose) air/fuel mixture. Voltmeter should indicate low voltage (about .2 volt). Richen air fuel mixture (restrict carburetor airflow, introduce propane or activate WOT switch). Voltmeter should indicate high voltage (about .8 volt). If oxygen sensor does not respond to leaning and richening mixture, replace oxygen sensor.
