CAUTION: Do not insert test equipment probes into any connector or fuse block terminal. The diameter of the test probes will deform most terminals. A deformed terminal can cause a poor connection, which can result in system failures. Always use the Connector Test Adapter Kit (J 43907) to front probe terminals. Do not use paper clips or other substitutes as they can damage terminals and cause incorrect measurements.

Before testing separate components or systems, perform all procedures listed in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 2.2L SATURN "L" SERIES article. Since many computer-controlled and monitored components will set a DTC if they malfunction, it is also recommended self-diagnostics be performed. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L SATURN "L" SERIES article.

NOTE: Testing individual components does not isolate shorts or opens. Perform all voltage tests using a DVOM with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

• You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.

• Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.

• The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.

• You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.

• You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
