Safety Warning
DIY auto repair can cause serious injury, fire, or vehicle damage. These guides are for informational purposes only. Always follow OEM torque specs, wear PPE, and consult a certified mechanic if you are unsure. You are solely responsible for your safety.
Three-Way Catalytic Converter
A Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) is used on all vehicles to reduce exhaust emissions. This type of converter reduces hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) levels.
Converter contains a reducing agent (Rhodium and Platinum) to reduce NOx and an oxidizing agent (Palladium and Platinum) to oxidize HC and CO. This causes HC and CO to oxidize (break down with the addition of oxygen and heat) into the harmless base elements: water (H2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ). Oxygen is removed from NOx, causing it to reduce to the harmless base elements nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O2 ).
