Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Start engine. Using scan tool, monitor KS No. 2 while varying engine speed between 1500-2500 RPM. If knock sensor voltage varies between 1-6 volts, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If knock sensor voltage does not vary, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Disconnect KS No. 2 harness connector. Using a DVOM, check voltage between sensor harness connector terminals No. 1 (Light Blue wire) and No. 2 (Black wire). If voltage is present on either circuit, repair short to voltage in circuit with voltage present. If voltage reading is not present on either circuit, go to next step.
- Check for cause of excessive mechanical noise like valve train, belt tensioner, loose bracket or low octane fuel in high altitude with engine under heavy load.
