2008 Pontiac Wave (CANADA) L4-1.6LFACTORY OEM SERVICE PROCEDURE
Engine Control Module: Testing and Inspection
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
ECM Replacement
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:
1. Idle Learn Procedure-Refer to the appropriate procedure:
* Idle Learn () for the 1.2L engine
* Idle Learn () for the 1.4L DOHC engine
* Idle Learn () for the 1.4L SOHC engine
* Idle Learn () for the 1.5L engine
* Idle Learn (Programming and Relearning) for the 1.6L (L91) engine
2. The crankshaft position (CKP) System Variation Learn Procedure- Refer to the appropriate procedure:
* Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn () for the 1.4L DOHC engine
* Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn () for the 1.4L SOHC engine
* Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn () for the 1.5L engine
* Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn (Service and Repair) for the 1.6L (L91) engine
3. Theft Deterrent-Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components (Tech 2) (Programming and Relearning)Programming Theft Deterrent System Components (Scan 100) (Programming and Relearning). The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. An ECM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password, and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle's password.
ECM Reprogramming
If the engine control module (ECM) needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) (Programming and Relearning).
Setup for Component Replacement
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.
* If any of the following components are replaced, an Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
- Idle Learn () for the 1.2L engine
- Idle Learn () for the 1.4L DOHC engine
- Idle Learn () for the 1.4L SOHC engine
- Idle Learn () for the 1.5L engine
- Idle Learn (Programming and Relearning) for the 1.6L (L91) engine
* Throttle body assembly
* ECM
* If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
- Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn () for the 1.4L DOHC engine
- Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn () for the 1.4L SOHC engine
- Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn () for the 1.5L engine
- Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn (Service and Repair) for the 1.6L (L91) engine
* CKP sensor
* Engine replacement
* Any engine repair that disturbs the relationship between CKP sensor and the crankshaft reluctor wheel.
