Sensor Range Charts

Sensor operating range information can help determine if a sensor is out of calibration. An out-of-calibration sensor may not set a trouble code, but it may cause driveability problems.

NOTE: Perform all voltage tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. To identify ECU terminals, see appropriate wiring diagram at the end of this article.
MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR (KEY ON, ENGINE OFF) (1)

Application Terminal No. Volts
1.6L 16 Less Than 1.0
2.0L 16 Less Than 1.0
(1) Measure voltage between ground and indicated ECU terminal with ignition switch in ON position, engine not running.
MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR (ENGINE IDLING) (1)

Application Terminal No. Volts
1.6L 16 0.7-1.1
2.0L 16 1.3-1.7
(1) Measure voltage between ground and indicated ECU terminal with engine idling at normal operating temperature.
COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE (1)

Temperature - Β°F (Β°C) Ohms
68 (20) 2100-2900
122 (50) 680-1000
(1) Measure resistance across sensor terminals.
EGR TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE (1)

Temperature - Β°F (Β°C) Ohms
212 (100) 76,770-93,830
(1) Heat sensor in boiling water, and measure resistance across sensor terminals.
OXYGEN SENSOR VOLTAGE (1)

Condition Volts
Lean 0.1
Rich 1.0
(1) With engine running at normal operating temperature, measure voltage between oxygen sensor connector terminal (center terminal on heated oxygen sensors) and ground.
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR RESISTANCE (1)

Position Ohms
Closed Throttle 1000
Partially Open 1000-9000
Wide Open Throttle 9000
(1) Measure resistance between terminals "B" (White wire) and "C" (power wire) on sensor. Black wire is ground circuit (not used on this test).
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE (1)

Application Terminal No. Volts
Sentra 20 0.4-5.0
(1) Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and indicated ECU terminal. Observe voltage while opening and closing throttle valve.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CONTINUITY

Application Reading
Sentra (1)
(1) Check continuity between sensor terminals while turning wheel. Ohmmeter reading should fluctuate between continuity and infinity.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
