1986 Mercury Lynx Base, MTXIIFACTORY OEM SERVICE PROCEDURE
Carburetor - MOTORCRAFT 740 2-Bbl: Overhaul: Reassembly
- To assemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Always use all parts if overhaul kit is supplied. DO NOTΒ use 1981-83 repair kits as later carburetors require smaller holes in gasket around idle jet holders. DO NOTΒ intermix parts from primary and secondary venturi.
- Use care when tightening main jet assemblies as main well tubes could collapse from overtightening. Jet clips MUST be installed after any disassembly or jets will work loose from vibration. Air horn gasket goes on main body of carburetor before jet clips are installed.
- Use rivet gun with Cap Replacer (T81P-53700-A) and Ford Rivets (Part No. 388299) 1/8" W shaft X 1/4" W head X 1/2" L shaft (3.2 X 6.4 X 12.7 mm) for choke installation. Make sure that coke cap spacer is installed properly. Engage choke cap bi-metallic tang in slot on choke housing shaft lever.
- Rotate choke cap to engage plastic spacer index tab. Install choke cap retainer over cap, fastening it loosely with standard screw. Pass rivet through retaining clamp and press it fully into casting.
- Tighten both rivets slightly to hold cap steady, then tighten each rivet fully until it both mandrels break off. Tighten standard screw. Ensure that all linkages move freely. DO NOTΒ overtighten attaching screws. When all adjustments have been completed, install idle mixture concealment plugs.
