With ignition key removed, ensure gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position. Insert key into ignition switch.
Turn ignition on. Ensure gearshift lever can only be moved with brake pedal depressed. Move gearshift lever to "R" position.
Ensure ignition key cannot be removed. Move gearshift lever to "P" position. Ensure ignition key is removable.
If shift interlock system does not operate as described, inspect suspect component. Repair as necessary. See COMPONENT TESTS . Check gearshift lever and control cable operation.
Place gearshift lever in "P" position. On Miata, Millenia and Protege5 push down emergency override button on shifter console using a screwdriver, and verify gearshift lever can be moved from "P" position. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . On MPV, push down emergency override button on top of steering column cover. On all models, if gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position, replace shift lock actuator.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

• You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.

• Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.

• The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.

• You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.

• You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
