On-Vehicle Inspection
HINT:
Inspect these items when the engine is cold.
- REPLACE TIMING BELT (See COMPONENTS )
- INSPECT DRIVE BELT (See INSPECTION )
- REPLACE SPARK PLUGS (See REPLACEMENT )
- INSPECT AIR FILTER
- Remove the air filter.
- Visually check that the air filter is not excessively damaged, dirty or oily. Replace the air filter if necessary.
- Reinstall the air filter.
- REPLACE ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION )
- REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT (See ENGINE COOLANT (3MZ-FE) )
- INSPECT GASKET IN FUEL TANK CAP (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION )
- INSPECT FUEL LINES AND CONNECTIONS AND FUEL TANK VAPOR VENT SYSTEM HOSES AND FUEL TANK BANDS
- Visually check the fuel lines for cracks, leakage, loose connections, deformation and tank band looseness.
- INSPECT EXHAUST PIPES AND MOUNTINGS
- Visually check the pipes, hangers and connections for severe corrosion, leaks and damage.
- INSPECT VALVE CLEARANCE (See ADJUSTMENT )

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
