Generator Output Test
NOTE:
Ensure battery is fully charged and load tested before testing. Verify drive belt tension is correct, electrical wiring and connectors are in good condition and battery terminals are clean and tight. Wait at least 30 seconds after starting engine before taking readings.
- Ensure generator belt tension is correct and battery voltage is greater than 12.4 volts. Start engine and check if generator warning light goes out. If generator warning light goes out, go to step Β 4 . If generator warning light does not go out, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, backprobe all 3 generator terminals. Voltage at "B" and "S" terminals should be about 12 volts. Voltage at "L" terminal should be about one volt. See Figure . Start engine and recheck voltage at all 3 generator terminals. Voltage at all 3 terminals should be 14.1-14.7 volts.
- If voltage is as specified, check wiring between battery and generator "B" terminal. If voltage is not as specified, check wiring to all generator and connector terminals. If wiring and terminals are okay, replace generator.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect connector from generator "B" terminal. Start engine. Turn on all accessories and depress brake pedal. Using an ammeter, measure amperage between generator "B" terminal and connector. If amperage is 65 amps or more at 2500-3000 RPM, charging system is okay. If amperage is not 65 amps or more at 2500-3000 RPM, go to next step.
- Check drive belt tension. See DRIVE BELT TENSIONΒ under ADJUSTMENTS. If belt tension is okay, replace generator.
