Testing (On-Vehicle)

  1. With ignition switch in the "RUN" position, charge indicator lamp should illuminate. After engine is running, indicator lamp should go out.
  2. If charge indicator lamp does not operate with ignition switch in "RUN" position, check the gauge fuse by verifying oil pressure indicator is on.
  3. Check lamp ground by jumping terminal "L" (Tan/Green) wire of alternator to ground. If lamp now lights, confirm that terminal "L" and alternator ground are clean and tight. If so, replace regulator. If bulb is good, check the charge indicator circuit wiring for an open.
  4. If charge indicator lamp stays on when engine is running, check the condition of drive belt. Check connections at alternator. Check for battery voltage at alternator terminal "B".
  5. Ensure that alternator ground is clean and tight. Perform charging system test. If alternator output is good, replace regulator.
