Code 32 - EGR System: Notes

1992 Isuzu Rodeo LS, 4WD, StandardSECTION Notes

The ECM operates a normally closed solenoid to control the EGR valve. By providing a ground path, ECM energizes solenoid, allowing vacuum to the EGR valve. The ECM monitors EGR effectiveness by occasionally de-energizing the EGR control solenoid and shutting off vacuum to the EGR valve. With EGR valve closed, manifold vacuum will be greater than it was during normal EGR operation. This change will be relayed to ECM by the MAP sensor. Code 32 will be set if the change is not within specified range and vehicle speed is greater than 50 MPH, engine vacuum is between 8-13 in. Hg and no change in throttle position occurs while test is being run.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to test numbers on diagnostic chart.
  1. With ignition on, engine stopped, solenoid should not be energized and vacuum should not pass to EGR valve. Grounding diagnostic terminal will energize solenoid and allow vacuum to pass to valve.
  2. Checks for plugged EGR passages. If passages are plugged, engine may have severe detonation on acceleration.
  3. Drive vehicle to provide sufficient engine load to operate EGR. Lightly accelerating (approximately 1/4 throttle) will produce a large and stable enough reading to determine if ECM is turning system on.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
