The ECM controls various output devices based upon signals received from input devices. These devices include sensors, switches, and circuits (such as an RPM reference signal from the ignition coil). Vehicles are equipped with different combinations of input devices. Not all devices are used on all models. To determine input usage on a specific model, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Available input signals include the following:

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
