Test Procedure
- Turn ignition off. Connect Hi-Scan Pro tool or equivalent to OBD-II Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. Turn ignition on. Monitor for DTCs. Verify DTCs P0101, P0102 or P0103 are set and go to next step.
- Start engine. Using Hi-Scan Pro tool or equivalent, monitor MAF sensor signal. Signal (air flow) should be about 3.7 grams per second at idle and 10.0-13.0 grams per second at 3000 RPM. If signal is as specified, problem is intermittent, check MAF sensor and ECM for proper harness connection and go to step Β 10. If signal is always below or above specification, go to next step. If signal varies and sometimes falls below or above specification, go to step Β 4.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF sensor 5-pin harness connector. See Fig 1. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and MAF sensor connector terminal No. 4 (Gray wire). Voltage should be battery voltage. If voltage is as specified, go to step Β 5. If voltage is not as specified, repair open or short circuit (in Gray wire) between ECM control relay and MAF sensor. For circuits identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repair go to step Β 10.
- Turn ignition off. Check MAF sensor for restrictions such as leaves or other debris. Also check sensor for corrosion, misplaced or damaged connector terminals, repair or replace as necessary and go to step Β 10.
- With MAF sensor harness connector disconnected. Measure resistance between ground and MAF sensor connector terminal No. 3 (Orange/Black wire). Resistance should be one ohm or less. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short circuit (in Orange/Black wire) between MAF sensor and ECM. After repair go to step Β 10.
- With MAF sensor harness connector disconnected. Measure resistance between ground and MAF sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Orange wire). Resistance should be infinity. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair short circuit (in Orange wire) between MAF sensor and ECM. After repair go to step Β 10.
- Disconnect ECM 81-pin harness connector. See Figure. Measure resistance between MAF sensor connector terminal No. 1 and ECM connector terminal No. 37 (Orange wire). Resistance should be one ohm or less. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short circuit (in Orange wire) between MAF sensor and ECM. After repair go to step Β 10.
- Reconnect ECM harness connector and leave MAF sensor harness connector disconnected. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and MAF sensor connector terminal No. 2 (Red/Orange wire). Voltage should be approximately 5 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair open or short circuit (in Red/Orange wire) between MAF sensor and ECM. After repair go to step Β 10.
- Verify than MAF sensor and ECM connectors are secure. If connectors are okay, replace MAF sensor with known-good component. Check for proper operation, if problem is corrected, go to next step. If problem persists, replace ECM and go to next step.
- Return vehicle to original condition. Clear codes using Hi-Scan Pro tool or equivalent. Verify repairs by driving vehicle and monitoring for pending codes. If DTC is set during test drive, follow appropriate DTC test procedure.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- β’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- β’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
