Idle Speed Adjustment

Adjust the idle speed using the HDS procedure if possible. If not, use the following procedure:

NOTE:
  • Leave the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connected.
  • Before setting the idle speed, check these items:
    • The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) has not been reported on.
    • Ignition timing
    • Spark plugs
    • Air cleaner
    • PCV system
  • On Canadian models, press the parking brake pedal. Start the engine, and make sure the headlights are off.
  1. Remove the intake manifold cover (see INTAKE MANIFOLD REMOVAL & INSTALLATION ).
  2. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge valve 2P connector.
  3. Connect a tachometer.
  4. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 RPM with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  5. Check the idle speed with no-load conditions: headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, radiator fan, and air conditioner are off.
    1. Idle speed should be: 
      1. 730+/-50 RPM (in Park or neutral) 
    6. NOTE: Do not turn the idle adjusting screw more than 1/4-turn without checking the idle speed.
