CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

Position the front wheels in the straight ahead position and remove the ignition key.
If removing the steering wheel or the steering column, depower the passive restraint system. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
If removing the steering column, remove the steering column opening trim cover and reinforcement.

Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Install the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

• You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.

• Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.

• The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.

• You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.

• You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
