Test A: Electronic Crash Sensor Module Does Not Respond To Scan Tool
NOTE:
Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module may also be referred to as Air Bag Diagnostic (ABD) monitor.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable, then positive battery cable. Wait one minute to deactivate air bag system. For additional air bag system information, see appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module harness connector and wait one minute for emergency power in ECS module to dissipate. ECS module is located under front of center console. See Figure. Inspect ECS module component and harness connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If connectors are okay, go to next step. If connectors are not okay, repair connectors as necessary and retest system for normal operation.
- Measure resistance of Orange/Blue wire (Orange wire at DLC on Escort) between DLC terminal No. 7 and ECS module harness connector terminal No. 19. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, inspect ECS module ground and power circuits. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ . If ground and power circuits are okay, replace ECS module and retest system for normal operation. If ground and power circuits are not okay, repair as necessary.
- Disconnect in-line harness connector C233 (White). See Fig 2. Measure resistance of Orange/Blue wire (Orange wire at DLC on Escort) between DLC terminal No. 7 and in-line harness connector C233 terminal No. 5 (female side). See Figure and Fig 3 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Orange wire and/or Orange/Blue wire between in-line harness connector C233 and ECS module harness connector. Retest system for normal operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange wire and/or Orange/Blue wire between in-line harness connector C233 and DLC. Retest system for normal operation.
