Starter Relay

  1. Remove starter relay. Measure resistance between starter relay terminal No. 2 and 1, 3, 4 and 5. See Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less between starter relay terminal No. 2 and any other terminals, replace relay. If all resistances are more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Using a jumper wire, connect between positive battery terminal and starter relay terminal No. 3. Using a test light, check for voltage at starter relay terminal No. 4. If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, replace relay.
  3. Using 3 jumper wires, connect one jumper between positive battery terminal and starter relay terminal No. 1. Connect another jumper wire between positive battery terminal and starter relay terminal No. 3. Connect the last jumper wire between negative battery terminal and starter relay terminal No. 2. Using a test light, check for voltage at relay terminal No. 4. If battery voltage is present, replace relay. If battery voltage is not present, using a test light, check for voltage at starter relay terminal No. 5. If battery voltage is not present, replace relay. If battery voltage is present, relay is okay.
