PCI Bus Communication Failure

2000 Dodge and Ram Intrepid R/TSECTION PCI Bus Communication Failure
NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Body Control Module (BCM), instrument cluster, Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB), and Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC). If communications was established with any of these modules, go to next step. If communications was not established with any of these modules, go to step  3 .
  2. Turn ignition off. Check PCI bus wire (Violet/Yellow wire) between BCM and module(s) that communication was not established for opens and shorts. See DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Also, check power and ground circuit to module(s) that communication was not established. See POWER DISTRIBUTION and GROUND DISTRIBUTION articles in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If problem exists, repair as necessary. If problem does not exist, problem is intermittent.
  3. Attempt to start vehicle. If vehicle starts and runs, go to next step. If vehicle does not start and run, go to step  5 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM harness connector C1. Measure resistance in Violet/Yellow wire between terminal No. 2 at DLC and terminal No. 14 at BCM harness connector C1. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace BCM. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Violet/Yellow wire between DLC and BCM.
  5. Turn ignition off. Connect all disconnected components. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at terminal No. 2 (Violet/Yellow wire) at DLC harness connector. See Figure . If voltage is greater than 7 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 7 volts or less, go to step  9 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM harness connector and disconnect BCM from back of junction block. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at terminal No. 2 (Violet/Yellow wire) at BCM harness connector C1. If voltage is 7 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is greater than 7 volts, repair short to voltage in Violet/Yellow wire between DLC and BCM.
  7. Measure voltage at each PCI bus terminals (Violet/Yellow wire) at appropriate BCM harness connector. See PCI BUS MODULE IDENTIFICATION  table. See Figure and Figure . If voltage is greater than 7 volts at any terminal, go to next step. If voltage is 7 volts or less at all terminals, replace BCM.
  8. Disconnect appropriate module(s) for circuit that voltage existed at in step 7)  . See PCI BUS MODULE IDENTIFICATION  table. Measure voltage at appropriate terminal(s) at appropriate BCM harness connector. If voltage is greater than 7 volts, repair short to voltage in appropriate wire. If voltage is 7 volts or less, replace appropriate module(s).
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM harness connector and disconnect BCM from back of junction block. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Violet/Yellow wire) at DLC. If resistance is greater than 1000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 1000 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Violet/Yellow wire between DLC and BCM.
  10. Measure resistance between ground and each PCI bus terminals (Violet/Yellow wire) at appropriate BCM harness connector. See PCI BUS MODULE IDENTIFICATION  table. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 1000 ohms or less at any terminal, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 1000 ohms at all terminals, replace BCM.
  11. Disconnect appropriate module(s) for circuit that resistance was 1000 ohms or less at in step 10)  . See PCI BUS MODULE IDENTIFICATION  table. Measure resistance between ground and appropriate terminal(s) at appropriate BCM harness connector. If resistance is 1000 ohms or less, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. If resistance is greater than 1000 ohms, replace appropriate module(s).

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
