Rear Riser Sensor Out Of Range High

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Concorde, and 2002 Chrysler 300M. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After making any repairs, perform MEMORY HEATED SYSTEM VERIFICATION TESTΒ  under VERIFICATION TESTS.

Monitored & Set Condition

  1. When Monitored: Ignition on.
  2. Set Condition: This condition is immediately set when the seat motor potentiometer feeds a value higher than the Memory Heated Seat/Mirror Module has stored in EEPROM.

Possible Causes:

  • Seat Sensor Ground Wire Open
  • Rear Riser Sensor High
  • Rear Riser Position Signal Short To Voltage
  • Seat Sensor 5-Volt Supply Short To Battery
  • Rear Riser Position Signal Short To Motor
  • Memory Heated Seat Mirror Module

Testing

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector. Measure resistance between ground and driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector terminal No. 3, seat position sensor ground circuit (Brown/Red wire). See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, leave driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector disconnected and go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step Β 3 .
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Memory Heated Seat/Mirror Module (MHSMM) connector C2. Measure resistance of seat position sensor ground circuit (Brown/Red wire) between driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector terminal "A" and MHSMM connector C2 terminal No. 16. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace MHSMM. See MEMORY HEATED SEAT/MIRROR MODULEΒ  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown/Red wire.
  3. Ensure driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector is properly connected. Ensure all other power seat motor sensor connectors are connected. Ensure rear riser motor is operational. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, monitor REAR RISER POSITION SENSOR voltage while operating rear riser motor to both limits. If voltage is more than 8 volts while motor is operating, replace seat track assembly. See POWER SEATS article. If voltage is not more than 8 volts while motor is operating, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector. Disconnect MHSMM connector C1. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector terminal "A", seat position sensor ground circuit (Brown/Red wire). If no voltage exists, leave driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector disconnected and go to next step. If any voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Brown/Red wire.
  5. Measure voltage between ground and driver power seat rear riser motor sensor connector terminal "C", seat sensor 5-volt supply circuit (Brown/White wire). If voltage is more than 5.5 volts, repair short to voltage in Brown/White wire. If voltage is 5.5 volts or less, leave rear riser motor sensor connector disconnected and go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Ensure MHSMM connector C1 is properly connected. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read REAR RISER POSITION SENSOR voltage. If voltage more than 0.2 volt, replace MHSMM. See MEMORY HEATED SEAT/MIRROR MODULEΒ  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is 0.2 volt or less, replace seat track assembly. See POWER SEATS article.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
