Standard Column: Reassembly

1993 Chevrolet Forward Control 7.4 NSECTION Reassembly
  1. To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Lubricate adapter and bearing assembly with lithium grease before installation. If equipped, install gear shift interlock solenoid and cable assembly. Ensure first tooth of ignition actuator rack is positioned between first and second tooth of actuator sector. See Fig 4 . With actuator rack fully inserted, block tooth of actuator sector will be positioned within block tooth of actuator rack.
  2. Install second retaining ring onto steering shaft. Lubricate steering shaft with lithium grease, and install shaft into steering column. Install turn signal switch electrical connector through housing. Install upper bearing retainer. Install steering column housing to steering column and tighten screws in clockwise sequence.
  3. Install 2 wiring protectors. Install steering column support bracket and support bracket bolts. Move ignition switch slider to far left position and then back one detent to right. See Fig 5 . Ignition switch should now be in OFF/LOCK position.
NOTE: Install ignition switch with switch in OFF/LOCK position. NEW ignition switch will be pinned in OFF/LOCK position; plastic pin must be removed after installation of ignition switch to steering column.
  4. Install ignition switch onto steering column. On Astro and Safari, unlock gear shift interlock cable at ignition switch actuator rack. Disengage cable locking tab. To adjust, turn ignition to OFF/LOCK position. Shift gear selector out of "P". Push cable toward solenoid until bowl lock hits bowl and stops. Move cable back .039-.078" (1-2 mm). Engage locking tab.
  5. On others with gear shift interlock, shift gear selector out of "P". Pull upper body of adjuster to unlock cable. See Fig 6 . Pull upper and lower cable bodies apart until bowl lock hits gearshift bowl. Move lower cable back one notch. Snap adjuster lock together.
  6. On all models, install dimmer switch actuator rod. Connect dimmer switch to actuator rod. Place a 3/32" drill bit into hole on dimmer switch. Position dimmer switch onto steering column and push against actuator rod to remove lash. Remove drill bit and tighten dimmer switch retaining screws. Connect ignition switch and dimmer switch electrical connectors.
  7. To complete installation, reverse remaining disassembly procedure. Lubricate turn signal canceling cam with synthetic grease before installation. Using Lock Plate Compressor (J-23653-C), install NEW shaft lock retaining ring. See Fig 2 . Ensure retaining ring is fully seated in groove on steering shaft.
  8. Carefully pull down on turn signal electrical wiring to remove any possible kinks within steering column. Tighten bolts and screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE at the end of this article.
  9. Apply parking brake. Do not touch brake pedal. With ignition on and gear selector in "P", ensure gear selector cannot be moved out of "P". Press brake pedal. Gear selector should now move out of "P" to any other gear position. If gear shift interlock did not operate as described, repeat step 4) or 5).
