DTC P0010:  Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) Oil Control Solenoid Valve A Malfunction

General Description

GHH479478Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.

The variable valve timing control (VTC) system consists of the VTC actuator A, the VTC oil control solenoid valve A, various sensors, and the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM controls the VTC oil control solenoid valve A by duty cycle and supplies hydraulic pressure to the advance chamber or the retard chamber in the actuator so the valve timing is optimized depending on the driving conditions (engine load, engine speed, and vehicle speed). If the difference between the VTC oil control solenoid valve A commanded current and the actual current is a specified current for a specified time, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type

Execution Continuous
Sequence None
Duration 5 seconds or more
DTC Type One drive cycle, MIL on

Enable Conditions

Condition
State of the engine Running

Malfunction Threshold

The difference between the VTC oil control solenoid valve A commanded current and the actual current is more than 0.20 A for at least 5 seconds.

Possible Cause

NOTE: The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
  • VTC oil control solenoid valve A VTC line short to ground
  • VTC oil control solenoid valve A VTC line open
  • VTC oil control solenoid valve A failure
  • PCM internal circuit failure

Confirmation Procedure

Operating Condition

  • Start the engine. Hold the engine speed [Engine Speed] at 3, 000 rpm without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on.
  • Drive the vehicle at a steady speed between 25 - 75 mph (40 - 120 km/h) for at least 5 seconds.
  • Drive the vehicle in this manner only if the traffic regulations and ambient conditions allow.

With the HDS

Select the VTC TEST in the Function Test with the HDS, then select the IN-VTC.

Diagnosis Details

Conditions for setting the DTC

When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored in the PCM memory.

Conditions for clearing the DTC

The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
