2000 Acura Integra GS-R, 4D SedanFACTORY OEM SERVICE PROCEDURE

Armature Test

  1. Check armature for wear or damage due to contact with permanent magnets. Replace as necessary. Check commutator surface. If commutator surface is dirty or burnt, clean commutator surface, and polish with emery cloth or No. 500-600 sandpaper. Check commutator diameter and runout. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONSΒ  . If commutator runout is within service limit, check commutator for carbon dust or brass chips between segments. If commutator diameter of runout is less than service limit replace armature.
  2. Check mica depth. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONSΒ  . If mica depth is not within specification, undercut with a hacksaw blade to minimum depth.
  3. Check for continuity between each commutator segment. Continuity should exist. If an open circuit exists between any 2 segments, replace armature.
  4. Place armature in growler. Turn on growler and hold hacksaw blade over armature. Slowly rotate armature. If armature attracts hacksaw blade or if hacksaw blade vibrates, armature is shorted and must be replaced. If blade does not respond as described, go to next step.
  5. Remove armature from growler. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between commutator and armature core, and between commutator and armature shaft. Continuity should not exist. If continuity exists in either case, replace armature.
