Ignition Control Module Input Test

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove distributor cap and rotor. Disconnect Black/Yellow, White/Blue, Yellow/Green, and Blue wires from Ignition Control Module (ICM). Turn ignition on. Test for battery voltage between Black/Yellow wire at ICM and body ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, inspect for open in Black/Yellow wire between ignition switch and ignitor wiring harness connector.
  2. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between White/Blue wire at ICM and body ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, inspect White/Blue wire and ignition coil for open circuit. If White/Blue wire is okay, substitute a known-good ignition coil.
  3. Unplug 32-pin PCM wiring harness connector. Inspect Yellow/Green wire for continuity between PCM wiring harness connector and ICM. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open Yellow/Green wire.
  4. Check Yellow/Green wire for continuity to ground. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Yellow/Green wire.
  5. Check continuity of Blue wire between ignitor and tachometer. Repair or replace wiring as necessary. If continuity exists, check Blue wire for continuity to ground. If continuity exists, repair short to ground. If continuity does not exist, ignition wiring is okay. Replace ICM.
