Safety Warning
DIY auto repair can cause serious injury, fire, or vehicle damage. These guides are for informational purposes only. Always follow OEM torque specs, wear PPE, and consult a certified mechanic if you are unsure. You are solely responsible for your safety.
Ignition System: Operation
As reluctor turns, its teeth come in line with 2 upright teeth of stator. As reluctor approaches and passes stator teeth, variations occur in the magnetic field around them. This causes the pick-up coil to signal ignitor.
As these signals are received, transistors inside the ignitor are turned off and on. This results in a magnetic field building up and collapsing in the primary circuit of the ignition coil.
When this field collapses, a voltage surge occurs in secondary circuit of the ignition coil. A high voltage spark is then fed from the coil, through the distributor, to the secondary wiring and spark plugs.
