Ford Explorer battery location
For the checked 2017, 2020 and 2024 Explorer examples, Ford places the primary 12V battery in the engine compartment. Earlier information on this page was inaccurate. A 2024 Explorer hybrid also has a separate secondary 12V battery behind luggage-compartment trim. Match the year, powertrain and battery before service.
Which battery are you looking for?
- Primary 12V battery: under the hood in Ford’s checked 2017, 2020 and 2024 Explorer references.
- Hybrid secondary 12V battery: Ford’s 2024 hybrid guide places it behind luggage-compartment trim. The hybrid service tree has a separate auxiliary-battery procedure.
- Hybrid high-voltage pack: a different system underneath the vehicle; do not treat the luggage-compartment 12V battery as the traction pack.
Ford warns that some vehicles have more than one 12V battery. Disconnecting one battery may leave electrical power connected. Use the exact vehicle procedure and keep clear of high-voltage components.
