Nissan Maxima Oil Type and Capacity by Year
Match the model year and engine before choosing oil. These are checked manual examples, not a specification for every Maxima from 2004–2023. Refill quantities are approximate; check the dipstick after the engine has been run and allowed to settle as the owner manual directs.
What do the checked later Maximas use?
The checked 2016 S, 2020 S and 2023 SV Fluids tables each list about 5-1/8 US qt with an oil-filter change and SAE 0W-20 as the recommended viscosity. The oil quality differs by year: the checked 2020 source and Nissan 2020 owner manual name API SN / ILSAC GF-5, while the checked 2023 source and Nissan 2023 owner manual name API SP / ILSAC GF-6. Do not treat a viscosity alone as full product approval.
The 2009 Maxima S is a different case: both sources specify SAE 5W-30, but its hosted Fluids table says 4.50 US qt with filter and Nissan's 2009 owner manual says 4-7/8 US qt with filter. We cannot resolve that quantity from these two sources. Use the exact owner manual, fill gradually, and verify the level with the dipstick; do not treat either figure as a guaranteed pour-in amount.
